Christmas in The Hague: royal city, Sinterklaas and New Year bonfires
The Hague is the seat of government and home to the King, and Christmas here has its own character: the Lange Voorhout, lined with stately buildings, usually hosts an elegant Christmas market, and the shop windows around Noordeinde light up by late November. But here too, Christmas starts after Sinterklaas. Order in November; put your tree up on 6 December and it stays perfect until Epiphany.

In The Hague, Christmas trees long had a second life: in Scheveningen and Duindorp, young people collected them after the holidays for the big New Year's Eve bonfires on the beach, a tradition that has come under stricter rules in recent years. Today the city collects real trees by neighbourhood in January.
