What size Christmas tree for your home in Amsterdam?
Measure your ceiling height and leave 20 to 30 cm between the top (or tree topper) and the ceiling. In Amsterdam, also check the diameter on the product page: many homes are deep and narrow.

Christmas in Amsterdam: Light Festival, Sinterklaas and a tree at home
Every winter the Amsterdam Light Festival lines the canals with light art you can see on foot or by boat. But in Amsterdam, as everywhere in the Netherlands, Christmas really starts after Sinterklaas. Order your tree in November and the box is ready for 6 December. An artificial tree stays perfect until Epiphany without watering.
Want to carry the glow of the canals indoors? Choose warm white string lights and glass baubles. Red, white and black echo the city colours and its three St Andrew's crosses; gold and pine green remain classics. Tree collection in January? Not with an artificial tree
In January the City of Amsterdam collects real Christmas trees at drop-off points in the neighbourhoods, and several districts reward children who bring one in. But first that tree has to come down the stairs and along the street, and you keep sweeping needles.
An artificial tree can be packed away after use. Slip it into the storage bag and store it in the attic, the storage room or under the stairs. In a city where every square metre counts, that's a real win.
Beyond Amsterdam: Haarlem, Het Gooi, Almere and the coast
Many Amsterdammers spend Christmas with family in Haarlem, Het Gooi (Hilversum, Bussum, Laren) or Almere, or in a holiday home in Zandvoort or Bergen. An artificial tree simply stays there until next year: have it delivered once, store it on site and the house is ready every December.
In the spacious homes of Het Gooi and the villas of Bloemendaal, go for 240 cm or more, or a flocked model. In the terraced houses of Almere or Purmerend, a pre-lit tree of 180 to 210 cm fits most living rooms.

What size fits a canal house?
A bel-étage on the canal ring (3.20 to 4 m ceilings) takes a tree of 240 to 300 cm, such as the Monaco. In De Pijp or Oud-West choose 210 cm; in a new build, 180 to 210 cm.
Should I put the tree up before or after Sinterklaas?
In the Netherlands most people wait until after pakjesavond, the Sinterklaas gift evening on 5 December. Order in November and check the availability of your model and size, and put the tree up on 6 December.
